Daily Easter Devotion Tuesday, May 13

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 – Psalm 116; Exodus 32:21-34; 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 and Matthew 5:11-16

Jesus said unto his disciples and unto us;

Matthew 5:11-16 – 13″You are the salt of the earth; … 14″You are the light of the world.

When you hear those words spoken of you, what comes to mind? How do you hear these words?

Salt is an important element for life. Salt has the ability to help preserve foods and bring out the flavor of foods. Jesus came to preserve life, give eternal life and he came that we might discover real life. Today, Jesus is calling us to participate with him in offering unto others the gift of real life. What might you do today to help do just this?

Light is also an essential element of life? Yes, there can be life in a cave that light never enters but even this is because of nutrients that enter the cave because of water or minerals that light has shined on. As the days get longer and days warmer it’s amazing to see how life is returning; more and more birds singing, babies being born, green leaves upon the trees, flowers, plants growing. All because light from the sun is shining more and more upon us. As the light from God’s Son shines upon us we grown in him and His light shines through our lives. You are the light of the world. What do you do to help illuminate the world around you?

Hear now these complete passages.

13″You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

May we strive to always be refreshed in Christ, so we can be used by God to refresh the lives of others around us.

14”You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Do you put your Christian faith under a basket? And if not how do you let it shine, let it shine, let it shine?

Quick joke – Good Christian man is driving down the street. He’s got all the good bumper stickers on his car. “WWJD – What Would Jesus Do” “Honk if you love Jesus”. This particular day he’s in a real hurry. His morning got a slow start and now he was in a hurry to get to work. He got behind someone who was texting at the light and just set there as the light turned green. He got really angry. Honked his horn. Shook his fist. And even leaned out the window and yelled at the guy in front of him. It just happened that a police officer was behind him. The policeman pulled him over and arrested him and hauled him off to jail.

When the man asked the officer why he was arrested, the officer said; “Well I figured you were driving a stolen vehicle because someone who loves Jesus wouldn’t have acted the way you did.”

Be careful how you act while driving. Especially if you have a church emblem or Christian bumper sticker on your car. Even if you don’t be careful how you act while you drive and while you live.

“You are the salt of the earth; … “You are the light of the world.

O Christ you have called us to be salt and light to those around us. May You use us as instruments of your love, peace and life. We know we always don’t do or say what You call us to do or say. Forgive us and help us be better disciples of You this day. Amen.
