Daily Easter Devotion Friday, May 9

Friday, May 9, 2014 – Psalm 49; Exodus 24:1-18; Colossians 2:8-23 and Matthew 4:12-17

Colossians 2:8-23 – 8See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. 9For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority.

Christ is to be our head and the cornerstone of faith and life. Yet, many around us attack Christianity or simply see religion in general as something of the past.

I read the following a couple of weeks ago. It comes from 1700’s yet could be something said of today.

It is come, I know not how, to be taken for granted, by many persons, that Christianity is not so much as a subject of inquiry; but that it is, now at length, discovered to be fictitious. And accordingly they treat it, as if, in the present age, this were an agreed point among all people of discernment; and nothing remained, but to set it up as a principal subject of mirth and ridicule, for its have for so long interrupted the pleasures of the world.

– Joseph Butler (1692-1752), The Analogy of Religion

Philip St. Romain the author of Daily Spiritual Seed who posted this quote went on to say and ask;

“This spirit of ‘mirth and ridicule’ toward people of religious faith is still with us. How do you experience this in your life? How do you deal with it?”

I’d ask the questions this way. How do you see our faith being made fun of today? How do you think we should deal with it?

O Christ, thanks for being our foundation of faith and life. May we trust in You even as our faith is ridiculed and made fun of in media and by many different people. May we seek to grow in faith and faithfulness showing Your light and love unto the world. Amen.
