Daily Easter Devotion Monday, May 5

Monday, May 5, 2014 – Psalm 124; Exodus 18:13-27; 1 Peter 5:1-14 and Matthew (1:1-17) 3:1-6

In today’s readings I find a great deal of advice to me as pastor and to the elders. Advice given to prevent burnout and to help carry out all the work God gives us to do. In ways I listen and follow the advice given, yet in other ways I tend to carry many of the burdens of ministry. So, I need to continue to listen unto God’s word and not only listen to take the good advice given and follow it.

Here’s some words of advice that is given to all of us, be we leaders in the church or one who is called to be Christ’s disciple.

1 Peter 5:1-14 –  7Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. 8Discipline yourselves, keep alert.

Do you tend to worry about things? Do you carry some anxiety? Cast all your concerns upon Christ, asking God to help you through the power of the Holy Spirit to either address them or to let them go for there is nothing you can do about them.

The opening lines of the Serenity Prayer can help with this.

“God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.”

Secondly discipline yourself. An athlete cannot compete well if she doesn’t discipline herself. Nor can a person in a chosen profession perform well unless he disciplines himself and tries to improve in his chosen profession. So it is with us as God’s children, Jesus’ disciples, we need to discipline ourselves in God’s ways, seeking always to follow Christ. We do this through prayer, Bible study, fellowship, worship and seeking to abide with God. What spiritual practices do you keep that help you discipline yourself? I’m glad for many of you, my daily devotions help you but what else do you do daily to help guide you as a child of God?

O God, thanks for being there for us and sending leaders to help guide us in your ways. As one of those leaders may you strengthen my faith and may I help others as they seek to follow you. Be with each one who reads this daily devotion and may he/she seek to follow you and glorify you through all they think, say and do this day. Amen.

Psalm 124 – 8Our help is in the name of the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.
