Daily Lenten Devotion Friday, April 11

Friday, April 11, 2014 – Psalm 22; Exodus 9:13-35; 2 Corinthians 4:1-12 and Mark 10:32-45

Psalm 22 – 12  Many bulls encircle me,
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13  they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.

As we turn the corner on this the last full week of Lent, what comes to mind is how the Jewish officials plotted and schemed how to trip Jesus up and to have him killed, yet Jesus kept his focus upon going to Jerusalem and the cross.

In the reading from Mark we hear Jesus once again telling his disciples what will happen to him. James and John request that one sit at his right and one his left in his kingdom. Their request upsets the rest of the disciples. Jesus responds;

Mark 10:32-45 –42So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

How do you understand all that Jesus did for you? What do you hear Jesus calling you to do for others?

Then in the reading from 2 Corinthians we hear;

2 Corinthians 4:1-12 – 5For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness”, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

In our readings today we hear how we are to be slave of God and slave to others. How do you understand this?

How will you show Christ’s love and light unto others this day?

A lot to consider, yet this is just what Lent is all about, examining our lives in the light of God’s word to us and seeking a closer walk with the one who walked into Jerusalem, the one who gave his life that we might have life.

God’s blessings on you, on this last Friday of Lent 2014.

O God, I know I put myself and my needs and wants above other’s needs. Today and this coming week which is called Holy Week, open my heart, mind and soul to all you have done for me and all you call me to do for others. Amen.
