Daily Lenten Devotion Friday, April 4

Friday, April 4, 2014 – Psalm 22; Exodus 2:1-22; 1 Corinthians 12:27-13:3 and Mark 9:2-13

Those are the daily readings for today. My reflections though will come from yesterday’s gospel lesson as it was on my mind most of yesterday and this morning; Mark 8:27-9:1.

Mark 8:27-9:1 – 27Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”

Who do you say that Jesus was and is? This is a very important question for each of us. This is not just a very important, our answer that question truly informs the rest of life.

So, who do you say that Jesus was and is?

Then later in our reading we hear;

34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?

As I hear Jesus’ words to his disciples, I hear Jesus calling us to real life. “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Our cross that we pick up is making sacrifices that help give life to others. It’s putting God and others before us, before me. It’s striving to truly love God and love others.

If our goal is to save our life, protect what we have, in the end we lose it. If our goal is to find real life, we’ll only find it as we trust in God, love the Christ and seek to lose our life in loving and serving God.

We all have things or aspects of our life that we hold on to. Part of our journey in Lent is to discover what we need lose, to let go of so we can better live to glorify and honor God.

Through Christ we are being called to real life. This day, ask God to lead you to real life, real love of God, so you can let go of all that holds you back, holds you down and open your life to that which is real life.

Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son who came to reveal to us real abundant life.

O God, so much holds us back; our things, our feelings, our fears, our love of this life. Help us let go of those things, those thoughts, those emotions that keep us tied up and open us up to the real life you offer us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Psalm 22 – 3Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4In you our ancestors trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5To you they cried, and were saved;

in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.
