Daily Lenten Devotion Wednesday, April 2

Wednesday, April 2, 2014 – Psalm 5; Genesis 50:15-26; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 and Mark 8:11-26

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 – 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Today hear this; “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” To each my friend. That means to you is given gifts of the Spirit.

What I find in my ministry is that we are really good at seeing the gifts given unto others but we are bind to the gifts given unto us.

May your prayer be today that God remove your blinders and help you see the gifts given you, manifestations of the Spirit given for the common good.

It may help to hear this passage from The Message and particularly the list of gifts given.

4-11 God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful:

wise counsel
clear understanding
simple trust
healing the sick
miraculous acts
proclamation
distinguishing between spirits
tongues
interpretation of tongues.

All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when.

This isn’t a complete list of the gifts given unto us. Don’t let this list limit you and don’t you limit God either. Be open to the Spirit revealing unto you this day your gifts given for the common good. Given so that God can be glorified and known.

O God, open our minds, hearts and eyes unto the gifts you have given and are giving unto each of us. Help us focus upon our particular gifts and how you call us to use them for the common good. Amen.

By the way; I believe that God gives us different gifts at different times in our lives. So the gifts we receive early in our lives may not be the ones he gives unto us in the later years of life. Be open to the Spirit giving you new gifts as you live and breathe the Spirit.

Psalm 5 – 8 Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness
