Daily Lenten Devotion Thursday, March 20

Thursday, March 20, 2014 – Psalm 27; Genesis 42:29-38; 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 and Mark 4:21-34

1 Corinthians 6:12-20 – 12“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

Mark 4:21-34 – 23Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” 24And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”

What do you pay attention to? What dominates you?

I know at times I have been dominated by the fluctuations of the stock market. I’d pay close attention to how the markets were doing; going up felt good, when it was diving brought fear.

I know at times I get focused upon church membership or average church attendance their going up or going down. Given the year we are having average church attendance is down, I look for it to improve come springtime and people returning home and no more snow Sundays.

I know I focus and at times obsess about other things. What I hear Jesus telling me is; when I do this my focus is off of him and his word to me. The things of this world will pass away but his kingdom shall be forever. Focus upon Him and His word to us, for in this is true life.

Hear now a couple of Jesus’ parables contained in today’s reading from Mark.

26 He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.”

30 He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

What do you pay attention to? What dominates you?

O Jesus, may my focus be upon You and Your word unto me. Help me know when I am misplacing my attention on things of this world. Help me focus upon you and Your love, Your ways, Your word unto me. Thanks for Your parables. They help me think about my life and real life. Amen.

Psalm 27 – 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom
(or what) shall I be afraid?
