Daily Lenten Devotion Monday, March 17

Monday, March 17, 2014 – Psalm 145; Genesis 41:46-57; 1 Corinthians 4:8-20 (21) and Mark 3:7-19a

1 Corinthians 4:8-20 (21) – 20For the kingdom of God depends not on talk but on power.

Today, I’m going to keep track of the number of times I plug into the power grid. So, far what I’ve figured is that my computer is plugged into the power grid allowing me to do my morning devotion. The coffee pot is plugged in and on, set to brew our morning coffee at 5:30 am. Lights on giving light to what would be a very dark room. Heat pump kicked on giving heat on the cold morning. (Got 4 inches of snow yesterday afternoon evening. Temp 19 degrees.) That’s only a few of the ways I am connected to the power grid.

Our reading from 1 Corinthians calls for us to be connected to the power of God, power of the Holy Spirit, so we can accomplish all we are called to accomplish. We’re to be God’s people, sharing his light and love. To do this we have to be connected to our power source, the power source of real life, namely God.

So, as you think about how you go about your day connected to the power grid, notice also how you are called to be connected unto God the true power source of real life.

Psalm 145 – 3   Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
his greatness is unsearchable. …

8   The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9   The Lord is good to all,
and his compassion is over all that he has made.

O God, as I go about my day noticing how important the power grid is to my getting things done and giving me the power to do them, may I also notice how it is only through Your power in me that I can do all that I do. Empower me today O God, to be your light unto others and to share Your love with them. Amen.

BTW Happy St. Patrick’s day to you. Here’s a prayer attributed to St. Patrick. It fits well my devotion for today.

As I arise today,
may the strength of God pilot me,
the power of God uphold me,
the wisdom of God guide me.

May the eye of God look before me,
the ear of God hear me,
the word of God speak for me.

May the hand of God protect me,
the way of God lie before me,
the shield of God defend me,
the host of God save me.

May Christ shield me today.
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit,
Christ when I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Amen
