Daily Lenten Devotion Saturday, March 15

Saturday, March 15, 2014 – Psalm 143; Genesis 41:1-13; 1 Corinthians 4:1-7 and Mark 2:23-3:6

1 Corinthians 4:1-7 – 1Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. 2Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. ….. 7For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as if it were not a gift?

One of my foundational beliefs is that everything I have truly comes from God. This includes knowledge, possessions (house, car and cash), work, life itself. All are gifts from God, given to me not to possess but to be blessings unto others. I’m simply a steward of God’s manifold treasures.

What I notice is that at times my possessions possess me. When this happens, I have to remind myself they are simply gifts from God, given to help me serve God, enjoy God and bless many others along the way.

“Love is Like a Magic Penny” is a folk song I used to sing with my youth group in Odessa, Texas. It was a fun song and really taught an important lesson about life and faith.

Love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away
Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more.

It’s just like a magic penny.
Hold it tight and you won’t have any.
Lend it, spend it and you’ll have so many
They’ll roll all over the floor. For

Love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away
Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more.

Money’s dandy and we like to use it
But love is better, if you don’t refuse it
It’s a treasure and you’ll never lose it
Unless you lock up your door.  For

Love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away
Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more.

So let’s go dancing ‘till the break of day
And if there’s a piper, we can pay
For love is something if you give it away
You end up having more.

How do you give your magic pennies (faith, love, life itself) away? When have you done this and then realized how much more you have to share?

Friends, we are simply stewards of all God gives unto us. May we find ways to really enjoy what God has given us by sharing it with others.

O God, thanks for all the gifts you have given and give unto us. May we not hold on to or bury your treasure but find ways to share it with others. Use me as an instrument of new life this day. Amen.

Psalm 143 – 8   Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
for in you I put my trust.
Teach me the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul. ….

10  Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
Let your good spirit lead me
on a level path.
