Daily Lenten Devotion Monday, March 10

Monday, March 10, 2014 – Psalm 119:73-80; Genesis 37:1-11; 1 Corinthians 1:1-19 and Mark 1:1-13

Psalm 119:73-80 – 73  Your hands have made and fashioned me;
give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.

Friends, each of us has been made and fashioned by God. May it be our Lenten prayer that God give us understanding and that God teach us his commandments.

I now always chuckle when I think of the Ten Commandments. On the Sunday that the people of Community Presbyterian Church celebrated my ten years as their pastor, I was asked by the youth to recite the Ten Commandments. I could remember some but not all. It was pretty comical. But what I did remember was Jesus’ summary of all the laws and prophets. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul and all your strength and love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

May God give us understanding as to how to do just that, for in loving God and others we’ll keep God’s commandments and follow in God’s ways.

From our readings today it looks like we’ll be reading 1 Corinthians and Mark during our journey through Lent. Great books of the Bible which can help us hear about the life of Christ and the life of the early church.

O God, bless our Lenten journey as we delve into your word, may our hearts, our minds, and our souls be open daily to your word to us. Help us to hear Your word unto us and then seek to follow knowing that You are our Creator, our Redeemer and our Sustainer; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
