Daily Lenten Devotion Thursday, March 6

Thursday, March 06, 2014 – Psalm 27; Habakuk 3:1-10 (11-15) 16-18; Philippians 3:12-21 and John 17:1-8

John 17:1-8 – 3And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. ….

6“I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

In the Sunday school class that I lead, we’ve been taking a look at the twelve disciples/apostles of Jesus. These were some of the ones Jesus is talking about in our reading today. Jesus gave God’s word to the twelve, who then passed it on to others, who passed it on to others, until we get to those of today whom believe and trust in Christ.

There’s a song that I used to sing with the youth group I lead many years ago and have sung in church on occasion. “Pass It On”. Here are some of the lyrics of the song and a link to the song.

It only takes a spark, to get a fire going.
And soon all those around can warm up in the glowing.
That’s how it is with God’s love.
Once you’ve experienced it, you’ll spread His love to everyone.
You’ll want to pass it on.

One of my hopes for this Lenten season is that I find ways to pass on the gift God has given unto me. It’s not for me to hold on to but to find ways to share with others. May God help me do just this through worship and preaching, through my pastoral care, through the care God shows others through me.

I’ve shared this before but where the text says; 3And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Eternal life doesn’t begin simply when we die, it begins now as we trust and believe in the one whom God sent to reveal real life unto us.

So, my friends trust and believe and allow God to help you experience real, abundant life.

O God, thanks for the gift of Your Son. Thanks for Your word which he shares and we can even now share in. Help us believe and trust in Your Son who is the Christ and came to give us life; life now and life forever more. May we find ways to share this gift with others even this very day. Amen.

Psalm 27 – 1   The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom
(or what) shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom
(or what) shall I be afraid? …
