Daily Devotion Tuesday, March 4

Tuesday, March 04, 2014 – Psalm 42; Proverbs 30:1-4, 24-33; Philippians 3:1-11 and John 18:28-38

Psalm 42 – 1   As a deer longs for flowing streams,
so my soul longs for you, O God.
2   My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and behold
the face of God?

As a deer longs from flowing streams, so I long for springtime, O God. I thirst for signs of spring. When shall we behold and see springtime really come this year, O God.

Everyone I know is longing for spring to show it’s beautiful face; warmer days, flowers blooming, grass growing, snow melted away. I have seen some signs of spring. Early flowers have put forth their first growth. Robins have returned to the Ozarks. A friend pointed out the first Pelican on Lake Taneycomo. They travel through our area and take a respite from their long migration north here on our lake. There are also some buds on the trees. I’m ready for spring to truly arrive and push the deep cold of this winter away.

Today is Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins. Lent is a time for opening ourselves up to the miracle of God’s grace that comes with Holy Week and Easter. Many will choose to give up something for Lent, yet Lent is also a good time to take on some new spiritual practices. Maybe it’s turning off the TV and having a true quiet time with God. Maybe it’s reading through one of the gospels during the 6 ½ weeks of Lent (40 days, plus the Sundays from Ash Wednesday till Maundy Thursday).

Phyllis and I might be, we haven’t officially decided, drink only water during Lent and use the saved money to benefit the Living Waters ministry that seeks to provide clean water to people who have none. In doing this, it will help us be mindful of the wonder of being able to drink clean water and help us be aware of the fact that some people have none.

I’ll also be leading a small group on Wednesday nights. This group will be looking at the lectionary readings for Lent. This week we’ll be looking at and discussing; Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 (you might want to read all of Genesis 2:15-3:7); Psalm 32; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11.

Are you longing for God’s presence? Are you longing to be closer to God? Best way I know is to make time to be with God, abide in God’s word and be quiet listening for God speaking to you.

As the flowers open themselves in the coming days to the light of the sun. So, may we open ourselves up to God’s presence and God’s love giving through His Son, Jesus Christ.

O God, as I long for spring to truly arrive, so I long for You, O God. Help me open myself to your presence that is all about me in good times and bad. Amen.
