Daily Devotion Saturday, March 1

Saturday, March 01, 2014 – Psalm 122; Proverbs 8:22-36; 2 Timothy 1:1-14 and John 12:20-26

2 Timothy 1:1-14 – 4Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 5I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. 6For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; 7for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. …

13Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.

Just recently I learned of the faith that goes back on my grandmother Ackerman’s side of the family tree. She had been adopted by Dr. and Mrs. Fulford. What I learned was that Dr. Fulford’s father was a Methodist minister. My grandmother’s strong faith is what I remember as a child. Now I know this faith came through many generations and even now is being passed on to Mackenzie my granddaughter. The faith that has been passed on to us and is even now being passed on began with Jesus Christ and was passed on to his followers and their followers and now unto us. The faith given to us is to empower us in our daily living, guiding us in love and self-discipline.

We often guard our earthly treasures, so should be guard the faith that has been given to us. Yet, in this guarding may we find ways to pass it on to others, for it is a gift to be shared.

Friends today, seek to kindle or rekindle the gift of God that is within you. Fan the spark of faith that has been given to you. In the fanning maybe we can start a fire strong enough to chase off this winter of 2014 or at least be comforted in knowing that God’s love abides with us always.

For those who are a part of Community Presbyterian Church. Sunday school and worship is cancelled for March 2, 2014; tomorrow. They raised the winter watch to a winter warning for tomorrow. I don’t see that changing. So, stay home, stay safe and may we not lose power. God bless those who have to work out in this extreme weather.

O God, may Your Spirit fan the flames of faith that abide in us and spread the love of God unto others. Amen.
