Daily Devotion Thursday, FEbruary 13

Thursday, February 13, 2014 – Psalm 97; Genesis 27:30-45; Romans 12:9-21 and John 8:21-32

Romans 12:9-21 – 9Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.

On this the eve of Valentine’s Day, a day set aside to show your love for another or others, this seems to be an appropriate text to focus upon. Paul says; “let your love be genuine.” What we do on this one day for our loved ones is nice, but what is really important is the other 364. If we don’t show our love every day, if we only focus upon it occasionally, is our love genuine? No.

In Phyllis’ wedding ring is inscribed “agape” that is the Greek word for the real, deep down love we are to have for those whom we love. This is the love that God showed us in Jesus and shows us every day. This is the love, sacrificial love; we are to give unto those we love.

So on this the eve of Valentine’s Day 2014, may we make it our goal to really show our loved ones that we really love them and then make this our goal all the 365 days of the year.

O God, forgive me for not loving Phyllis, my boys, Mackenzie, all my family members and members of your body as you have called me to love them. My love truly does come up short. Praise be to You, O God, for that Your love never comes up short but is upon us always. Help me love as you love me. Amen.

Psalm 97 – 1   The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad! …

6   The heavens proclaim his righteousness;
and all the peoples behold his glory. …

12  Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous,
and give thanks to his holy name!
