Daily Devotion Monday, February 10

Monday, February 10, 2014 – Psalm 5; Genesis 25:19-34; Hebrews 13:1-16 and John 7:37-52

The reading from the book of Hebrews today contains several independent sayings. To me they are similar to proverbs, things to remember and which can be applied to daily life. Here are a few which really spoke to me today.

Hebrews 13:1-16 –  2Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.

5Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”

8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Those are the ones that spoke to me today. Was there another or others that spoke to you?

Then in the reading from John we hear.

John 7:37-52 – 37On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.'”

Out of the believer’s heart, out of your heart” will flow rivers of living water.

We go to any one of our sinks, showers or bathtubs and turn the faucet; out flows water, water in abundance. Yet the only way this can happen is if the water line is connected with the main water line that comes into the house from a main line from the city.

Well, my friends, the only way rivers of living water can flow from our hearts is if we are connected with the main line Jesus, who was and is connected to the main source of the waters of life – God.

Today, pay attention to the many times you go turn on a faucet and get water. I’ve done it about three times already: water to wash my hands, water for coffee and flush the toilet. All important but not near as important as my really connecting to God’s main line from which comes the waters of life.

O God, thanks for providing the main line for the waters of life, Your Son Jesus Christ. I’m glad that he is the source of living waters. Use me today as a conduit for this living water which can give any who drink of him real, abundant life. Amen.

Psalm 5 – 8   Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness …
make your way straight before me.
