Thursday, February 06, 2014 – Psalm 116; Genesis 23:1-20; Hebrews 11:32-12:2 and John 6:60-71

Hebrews 11:32-12:2 – 1Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

When these words were written, the author was speaking of all those in the Old Testament who had lived by faith, loved God and sought to follow God. Today, we’re even surrounded by a greater cloud of witnesses; all the Apostles, all the early Christians who lived and died for the faith, all who followed them. We are now surrounded by the saints of almost 2,000 years. Wow, what a cloud of witnesses.

So here is the encouragement for us and it is good to hear these words as the Winter Olympics begin today; “let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.” The Olympians have trained long and hard for their chance to compete. There are two Olympians who are competing who grew up in Springfield, MO. They will be fun to watch, one a speed skater and the other the winner of the USA women’s skating competition. As they trained long and hard, so too must we train daily to run the race that is set before us.

As the Olympians look at those who have gone before them, we too can look to one who has gone before us; namely our Lord, Jesus Christ. May we keep our eyes upon Him for it is He that we are to live for and to truly serve. It is He who will help us perfect our faith and run the race. Keep your eyes upon Him. He ran the race and got the ultimate prize and offers us the prize of knowing we have run our race seeking to please God and get our reward of knowing Him and one day abiding in God’s holy kingdom.

O God, we have a race to run today, the race of living each moment loving and glorifying you. May we keep our eyes on Jesus who did run the race, receive the eternal reward and who offers this even to us today. May each of us run our individual race, knowing that you are with us cheering us on. Thanks for all the opportunities you give us to love and serve you. Amen.

Psalm 116 – 5   Gracious is the LORD, and righteous;
our God is merciful.
