Friday, January 31, 2014 – Psalm 88; Genesis 17:15-27; Hebrews 10:11-25 and John 6:1-15

Psalm 88 – 1   O LORD, God of my salvation,
when, at night, I cry out in your presence,
2   let my prayer come before you;
incline your ear to my cry.

3   For my soul is full of troubles,
and my life draws near to Sheol. ….

6   You have put me in the depths of the Pit,
in the regions dark and deep.
7   Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
and you overwhelm me with all your waves.               Selah

8   You have caused my companions to shun me;
you have made me a thing of horror to them.
I am shut in so that I cannot escape;

What I hear in this Psalm is one who has hit a really rough patch and blames God for all his troubles. You have …Your wrath … You overwhelm me .. You caused … You have made me …

What I have noticed in my own life is that I create most of my troubles or life events do. When I suffer it’s because of something I have done or not done or because of some life event. It’s not because of something God brings upon me, it’s because of life.

I’ve met a goodly number of people who blame God or others for all their troubles. I’m always leery of people like this because it seems that they do not take accountability for their part. They only blame God or others.

I’m wondering when I have done this? How different things would have been if I’d taken responsibility for my part in the problem I was facing.

This Sunday’s reading from the Gospel is the Beatitudes of Christ (Matthew 5:1-12); Blessed are … Here’s a link to the reading; http://www.presbyterianmission.org/devotion/revised-common-lectionary/2014/2/2/#gospel

What I hear in this text is that we are blessed/happy as we know that it is in God that we are to trust even and maybe especially as we face the trials and tribulations of life.

Through what lenses do you view life? It makes a world of difference.

O God, forgive me for those times I’ve blamed You for my troubles when it was my actions or inactions that caused them or life events. Help me fully trust in you and view life as a blessing for I know I am blessed through Your eternal love. Amen.
