Wednesday, January 22, 2014 – Psalm 15; Genesis 9:18-29; Hebrews 6:1-12 and John 3:22-36

John 3:22-36 – 4He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

What struck me today from our readings is how Jesus gives the Spirit without measure.

Often times when one asks a grandmother for her recipe, what you’ll hear is well I put in about a cup of this and a pinch of that. There is no real measuring to the ingredients. Oh there is some sense that you don’t want too much of this or too little of that, but it’s not a cup of this and 1/3 teaspoon of that.

Well Jesus doesn’t measure out how much of the Spirit He gives us. He simply pours out His Spirit upon His followers, upon those who believe and trust in Him. Here’s how The Message puts this.

And don’t think he rations out the Spirit in bits and pieces. The Father loves the Son extravagantly. He turned everything over to him so he could give it away—a lavish distribution of gifts. That is why whoever accepts and trusts the Son gets in on everything, life complete and forever!

In our reading from Hebrews we hear today.

Hebrews 6:1-12 – 7Ground that drinks up the rain falling on it repeatedly, and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.

Today, sense Jesus pouring out His Spirit upon you. Soak in His Spirit given to you, given lavishly, without measure. Receive this gift and seek to live and serve the Lord.

Friends as we trust and believe God will bless us with His Spirit and we will have abundant life now and forever more.

O God, I know I often times think that you have only given me a little bit of Your Spirit. Forgive me for limiting You to a little when You really give abundantly. May I sense the gift of the Spirit which You give extravagantly to me and all who believe. May I seek to live out the abundant life You promised me and You give to me. Amen.

Psalm 15 – 1   O LORD, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy hill?

2   Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right,
and speak the truth from their heart;  …..
5c Those who do these things shall never be moved.
