Tuesday, January 21, 2014 – Psalm 123; Genesis 9:1-17; Hebrews 5:7-14 and John 3:16-21

In our reading from Genesis we hear how God established his first covenant and gave a sign by which he would remember it. I find it interesting that the rainbow is so God would remember, yet so may it be a reminder to us as well.

Genesis 9:1-17 – I will require a reckoning for human life. …9“As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh;

Then in our reading from the Psalms we hear God’s people crying out to God for mercy.

Psalm 123 – 1   To you I lift up my eyes,
O you who are enthroned in the heavens! ..

3   Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us,

From John we hear what God did.

John 3:16-21 – 16“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

And so the gift of salvation is offered through Jesus, God’s Son.

Hebrews 5:7-14 – 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,

Friends, believe the good news of God; through the Christ God has established his eternal covenant with his people to be their God and they to be His people. It is through Christ that we know and experience God’s eternal love for us. It is through Christ that God has shown His everlasting love to us. So, believe and trust in the Christ.

O God, I praise You for You expressed Your love to us in sending Your Son through whom You have established Your eternal covenant with us. May we trust and believe, seeking always to remember what You have done. Amen.
