Daily Devotion Wednesday, January 15

Wednesday, January 15, 2014 – Psalm 89:1-18; Genesis 4:1-16; Hebrews 2:11-18 and John (1:29-34) 35-42

John (1:29-34) 35-42 – 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Hebrews 2:11-18 – 14Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Today, I’m led to lead us all in a time of confession of our sins, for all of us have fallen short of God’s will and God’s ways.

Call to confession

We’ve sinned a lot! Both we and our parents, our ancestors;
We’ve fallen short, hurt a lot of people.                                                       Ps. 106:6 (the Message)
Let us confess our sinfulness before God and one another. Let us pray.

Corporate prayer of confession

Jesus, we are sorry for not recognizing you when you came to earth. We know that you lived among us, experienced the life that we experience, and yet we missed you. In our humanity, we thought we needed a king. We didn’t realize we needed a humble Savior. We are sorry we did not recognize you yesterday when our lives were interrupted by what we thought was a happenstance event, or irritating and unfortunate occurrence. It was you; we thought it was a roadblock on the way to finding you. We’re sorry that we did not recognize you today. When life goes well, we chalk it up to good fortune or our own success. We miss the ways that you worked and led us. When someone is hurting, we don’t see you hurting along with them. You are all around, ever-present and yet we don’t see you. We pray that we will recognize you today, tomorrow, the rest of the week and the rest of our lives. Open our eyes that we may see. Thank you for always being near. Thank you for being the Lamb of God who takes away our sin. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon

“Know that you are blessed, how happy you should be –
You get a fresh start, your slate is wiped clean.
Know that you are blessed – God holds nothing against you.”                         Ps. 32:1-2 Message.
Friends, hear the good news of the gospel,
In Jesus Christ our sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.  Amen.

Psalm 89:1-18 – 1   I will sing of your steadfast love, O LORD, forever;
with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
2   I declare that your steadfast love is established forever;
your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
