Daily Devotion Thursday, January 9

Thursday, January 9, 2014 – Psalm 150; Isaiah 45:14-19; Colossians 1:24-2:7 and John 8:12-19

John 8:12-19 – 2Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

I have a candle that I light every morning when beginning my daily devotions. As I began to read this passage from John, the candle flickered and then went out. I had to pull the wick out of the melted wax before it could be relit. As I did this I was reading; “I am the light of the world.” Wow! And Jesus’ light never flickers, nor will it ever go out.

Yet, unless I tend the light that God has placed within me, the light given me because of Christ’s life, death and resurrection, it will flicker and maybe go out.

Today, may we tend the light God has given us through Christ. May we nurture it and let it nurture us, always striving to enable it to burn brightly within and through us.

Today’s reading from Psalms concludes our reading of the Psalms from beginning to end. It’s not surprising that the Psalms end with praise for all God has done and is a call for all of us to really praise the Lord.

Psalm 150 – Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty firmament!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord, morning, noon and night.
Praise the Lord with your words and deeds.
Praise the Lord in song and dance and quiet meditation.
Everyone, everything, always in everything, praise the Lord! Amen.
