Daily Christmas Devotion Saturday, December 28

Saturday, December 28, 2013 – Psalm 140; Isaiah 49:13-23; Isaiah 54:1-13 and Matthew 18:1-14
Cont. readings from Luke – Luke 2:22-35

Luke 2:22-35 – 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Simeon realized that in the gift of the Son of God some would believe destining them to rising and many others would not thus destining them to falling. God sent his Son that we might have life, real life and yet many did not and do not believe in him. Jesus couldn’t change how many would respond to him nor can we. All of this reminds me of Joshua’s words;

14 “Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:14-15)

We can’t change how anyone else will respond to God’s sending of His Son, yet we can seek to be God’s light in the world today. We can choose to believe and serve the Lord.

In the Gospel reading for today, we hear these words expressing God’s love for even the one.

Matthew 18:1-14 – 12What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.”

And then in the Isaiah 49 reading we hear; “16See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands;” (Isaiah 49:13-23)

Friends know this, God sent His Son to reveal His abundant love of all people. God cares about each and every one, even you. You are inscribed upon the palms of God’s hands and more importantly upon God’s heart. So believe in him, trust in his love revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ and let God raise you above all the stresses and strains of life. God has destined you for rising not falling. Thanks be to God.

O Lord, thanks for sending Your Son to reveal you love to us. May Your love be revealed to others through me this day. May Your light shine upon me and then from me. May one who does not believe come to believe because of Your love shown through me. Amen.
