Daily Christmas Devotion Friday, December 27

Friday, December 27, 2013 – Psalm 139; Proverbs 8:22-30; 1 John 5:1-12 and John 13:20-35

Psalm 139 – O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from far away.

Psalm 139 ranks as one of my favorite Psalms. When I read it I really get the sense of how God knows my rising and my falling, God knows my thoughts even far more than I do. God knows me inside and out, good and bad and he loves me. God created me and all people to be in relationship with him.

Today what struck me in the Psalm are verses 11-12;

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light around me become night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is as bright as the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

Life is full of good and bad times, times of light and times of darkness. In these verses we are reminded that God’s light and love cannot be consumed by the darkness. In fact God’s light breaks into the darkness and brings God’s light into the darkest places of our lives. So, the darkness cannot consume God’s light, in fact God’s light consumes and illumines the darkness.

Today’s continued reading from Luke is simply one verse – Luke 2:21.

21 After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Jesus was a common name in his day. Not sure if it would have made the top ten list for names of Jewish babies yet it was a common name. For this one born in Bethlehem though his name points to what he will accomplish through his birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection. The name Jesus means; savior. Jesus born in Bethlehem truly becomes the one who saves us from our sins and gives us new life. The name given him by the angel and then by his earthly parents, fits what he has been sent to do.

Returning to Psalm 139, its closing verses gives us a good daily prayer.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my thoughts.
24 See if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

In praying this prayer, what I’m hoping for is that God will reveal to me any of my ways that draw me away from him and reveal to me all the ways that lead me to real life.

As we approach the end of 2013, may part of our prayers be that we walk more in God’s ways in 2014. In the last days of this year and throughout the next may God lead us in His everlasting ways.

O God, you know me; my rising and my falling, you know all my thoughts. Thanks for loving me and may you guide me in your way everlasting. Reveal to me those things of which I need to confess and repent and help me turn to love You more fully. Guide me, guide us, in your Holy ways. Amen.
