Daily Advent Devotion Friday, December 20

Friday, December 20, 2013 – Psalm 133; 1 Samuel 2:1b-10; Titus 2:1-10 and Luke 1:26-38

The following from Titus is written mostly to us who are pastors or elders within the church. Yet I believe they are words we all need to take to heart.

Titus 2:1-10 – 7Show yourself in all respects a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, 8and sound speech that cannot be censured; then any opponent will be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us.

I had to look up gravity to understand its use in this verse. The NIV says; “In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech.” That helped me understand what Paul was saying to Titus and to us.

What we do is as important as what we say and in one sense to those outside the church may be more important. I’ve known many pastors whom their life outside the church did not match up to what they preached. Then I’ve also known many other pastors whom their very lives magnified what they preached.

At a conference I attended once the leader shared; “a great preacher who is a poor pastor will not be heard as effectively as a great pastor who is an ok preacher.” I’ve found that to be very true in my own ministry. I think it’s also true for all God’s children; our good/Godly actions help magnify the words, the love of God, that we share with others.

May our good works be a model of life lived in Christ and may we be serious about what we say and do this day.

Here’s the link to reading from Luke. Today we hear of the angel coming to Mary, revealing that she will be with child truly of God.

The angel said unto Mary; “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” I believe this to be true of all of us who trust and believe in Christ. The Lord IS with us, not the way the Son of God was in Mary, but in that Jesus comes to us and reignites the image of God that was and is in us.

So today hear God saying to you; “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

O God, this day may I sense Your presence that abides in me and may it be Your presence that guides me in all I do and say this day. May I seek to be true to You and a light unto your presence. Amen.

Psalm 133 – How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity!
