Daily Advent Devotion Monday, December 16

Monday, December 16, 2013 – Psalm 129; Zechariah 1:7-17; Revelation 3:7-13 and Matthew 24:15-31

What strikes me today is that each of our daily readings mentions God’s angels.

In Zechariah 1:7-17 we hear; 9Then I said, “What are these, my lord?” The angel who talked with me said to me, “I will show you what they are.”

God doesn’t communicate directly with Zechariah. God’s word to Zechariah and through Zechariah comes through an angel of God.

In the reading from Revelation (3:7-13) we hear; 7“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:

These are the words of the holy one, the true one,
who has the key of David,
who opens and no one will shut,
who shuts and no one opens:

Seems that there is an angel who is over the church in Philadelphia and that God communicates with the church of Philadelphia through this angel.

And then in the Matthew reading (24:15-31) we hear; 30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. 31And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

Seems that it will be God’s angels who announce the gathering of God’s elect at the end of all time.

God’s angels are God’s instruments of communication. God’s angels have been and will be an important part of God communicating his presence and his love.

My mom collected angels. I’m not sure how many she ended up having. Each was special though. One of the joys that my brother, sister and I had was making sure that all her family got a special angel from her collection. It was a fun day when we all set down to choose our special ones. The grandchildren each got one as well.

These are only symbols of God communicating his love, his good news, what is and what will be to his people. In the days to come pay close attention to the rolls that God’s angels play in communicating the conception and birth of Jesus.

Have you ever sensed God communicating to you through one of his angels? I haven’t but I do know people who have had this special experience.

Today, give thanks to God’s angels who become his messengers of God’s love and God’s very presence with us today.

O God, today I give thanks for how you use your angels to communicate your love to us. They are truly your messengers of what is and what will be. As you watch over us today, may we know that your angels watch over us as well. Amen.
