Daily Advent Devotion Saturday, December 14

Saturday, December 14, 2013 – Psalm 128; Haggai 2:1-9; Revelation 3:1-6 and Matthew 24:1-14

Haggai 2:1-9 – 6For thus says the LORD of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; 7and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the LORD of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the LORD of hosts. 9The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the LORD of hosts.

Haggai was one of the prophets who lived during the time of the rebuilding of the temple. Many of those who had been exiled from Judah/Israel had returned and they were rebuilding the temple. In this passage we hear how God promised that the treasures of the nations shall return unto God.

Friends, in Jesus Christ God did shake all the nations and the treasure has come unto God; lives dedicated to his glory.

Then in the reading from Matthew we hear;

Matthew 24:1-14 – 1As Jesus came out of the temple and was going away, his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. 2Then he asked them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.”

In 70 AD the temple was destroyed; burnt and torn down. I’m not sure what remnants of the temple remain in Jerusalem today, for the Dome of the Rock – Muslim shrine sits upon its remains.

It brings me peace to know that we are God’s holy temple, for as God’s Spirit abides in us we become God’s holy people who are His treasures and are called to be a blessing unto God.

Psalm 128 – Happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways.
You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you.

Today focus upon the fact that you are God’s holy temple and that you are one of his many precious treasures, not like gold or silver but treasure living to serve and glorify God, you are precious in God’s sight.

O God, thanks for these reminders as to how I am precious in your sight. I know I don’t always love you as I should. Continue your work of perfecting me, chisel off the rough places and help me fit perfectly into your holy, living temple. Amen.
