Daily Advent Devotion Thursday, December 12

Thursday, December 12, 2013 – Psalm 126; Amos 9:1-10; Revelation 2:8-17 and Matthew 23:13-26

Friends today in our readings we hear reasons to rejoice, along with some warnings from God’s word to us.

I find life to be full of green lights – those times when I in line with God’s will and work and moving forward. I also find many times of life when I either get a yellow light or red light. Yellow light – warning, caution called for and red light – calling for me to stop, pay attention and maybe even turn around.

Psalm 126 – The Lord has done great things for us,
and we rejoiced.

We have many reasons to rejoice and be glad. God has been faithful. God is faithful and in this we can trust that God will be faithful. God has done great things for us and we can live this day and all our days knowing God will do great things for us. Rejoice and be glad.

Then in the readings from Amos, Revelation and Matthew we sense God giving us some yellow or red lights for life. In reading the whole of God’s word to us I find that I’m often called away from one way of living life and called to a healthier way of living life. Hear now these words from God’s word to us today. These are my short excerpts from our readings. It would be good for you to read the whole passage.

Amos 9:1-10 – 1I saw the LORD standing beside the altar, and he said:

Strike the capitals until the thresholds shake,

and shatter them on the heads of all the people;

and those who are left I will kill with the sword;

not one of them shall flee away,

not one of them shall escape.

Revelation 2:8-17 – 14But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the people of Israel, so that they would eat food sacrificed to idols and practice fornication. 15So you also have some who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16Repent then. If not, I will come to you soon and make war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

Matthew 23:13-26 – 13“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! …. 16“Woe to you, blind guides,

In our readings how do you hear God giving you the green lights of life? How do you hear or sense God giving you yellow or red lights. From what is God calling you from and thus calling you to? As it says in our reading from Revelation and as our Lord said on many occasion; “let anyone who has an ear listen.”

O God, I give thanks today for all the green lights in life that you give to us; each calling us to love you, follow you and serve you. I also give thanks for the warning lights and the stop lights you give to us, for with each you are calling us unto You the giver of life; real and abundant, spirit filled life. You have given us ears and hearts by which we hear you, may we repent of the things we need to repent of and turn and follow you along the path ways of life. Amen.
