Daily Devotion Monday, December 2

Monday, December 2, 2013 – Psalm 119:41-88; Amos 2:6-16; 2 Peter 1:1-11 and Matthew 21:1-11

Yesterday was the First Sunday of Advent, a time when we turn our hearts, minds and souls to God’s promise to send his Son, the sending of his Son and the promise that Jesus will come again.

Mackenzie’s Sunday school teacher shared how the word Advent is the first part of adventure and that during Advent they would be on an adventure to discover God’s gift of His Son.

So too are we on an adventure to discover God’s real love for us. Advent/adventure now isn’t that a nice way to think about this season of the year.

The reading from 2 Peter 1:1-11 is a nice way to begin our journey through Advent. Hear now this word from God.

2 Peter 1:1-11 – 3His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature. 5For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, 7and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. 8For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Because of the awesome gift of his Son, we God’s people should celebrate the gift by dedicating ourselves to growing in God. Our text gives us a good idea as to how we might do just this.

make every effort to support your faith with:

goodness,

      and goodness with knowledge,

and knowledge with self-control,

                  and self-control with endurance,

                        and endurence with godliness,

                              and godliness with mutual affection,

                                    and mutual affection with love.

Because of God’s awesome gift given unto me, given unto all, I’m going to make it my goal to grow closer to God by focusing upon all the gifts God gives unto me, especially His Son Jesus the Christ.

Psalm 119:41-88 – 64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;
teach me your statutes.

68 You are good and do good;
teach me your statutes.

73 Your hands have made and fashioned me;
give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.

Amen.
