Daily Devotion Wednesday, November 27

Wednesday, November 27, 2013  Psalm 116; Obadiah 15-21; 1 Peter 2:1-10 and Matthew 19:23-30

1 Peter 2:1-10 – 4Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. …

9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Friends we are each called to come to the living stone (to Christ) and become one of Christ’s living stones in the building of his temple on earth.

One of my joys as pastor of Community Presbyterian Church, Forsyth is that the front of our building is built of stones, many of them. Each one placed beside or on top of another, beginning with the cornerstone of the church. So in looking at the front of the building I see all members and friends of the church who have helped make it a living presence of Christ within inner city Forsyth, Missouri. In a very real sense we’re at the center of Forsyth and even Taney County.

Today, I want you to imagine Jesus our Lord, Jesus the Christ as the living stone; the one who died and then rose so all can have life. Christ is the first of the living stones. Then imagine yourself as one of the living stones, one who trusts and believes, placed beside or on the Living Stone. Then imagine all the other living stones laid beside, above, below you; living stone upon living stone upon the Living Stone. Each of us is a living stone important to the whole structure.

Each of us is a part of God’s new house so that we, together and individually might proclaim God’s mighty acts, mighty love.

In the reading from Psalms today we hear;

Psalm 116 – Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
our God is merciful.
….

12 What shall I return to the Lord
for all his bounty to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.

How are we to lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord? I believe we do this as we proclaim, share God’s mighty love, mighty acts.

Two things for today; first you are a living stone called by the Living Stone to be part of His living temple today. Secondly, we are called to share his mighty acts with others, inviting them to be a part of God’s temple, God’s house on earth. Be open to the Spirit leading you to share God’s love with another or others this day.

O God, thank you for calling me and calling us to be a living stone upon the Living Stone. Open my heart and my lips so that I might share your love with others this day. Guide me and use me in the building up of your kingdom on earth. Amen.
