Daily Devotion Tuesday, November 26

Tuesday, November 26, 2013 – Psalm 115; Nahum 1:1-13; 1 Peter 1:13-25 and Matthew 19:13-22

First off I encourage you to read all of 1 Peter 1:13-25. I’ll be focusing my reflections on each of its sections and I believe it will help you to have read the whole reading. In reading the whole you just might hear God saying something to you along the way.

1 Peter 1:13-25 13Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. 14Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. 15Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16for it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

17If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. 18You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. 21Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God.

22Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. 23You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. 24For
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25  but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
That word is the good news that was announced to you.

In the first section what I hear is; discipline yourself … You shall be holy, for I am holy. A while back I decided that I needed to once again lose some weight. I need to lose about 10% of my weight, 20 unneeded, unhealthy pounds. So, I went to a health sight suggested by in health insurance provider and registered. The main recommendation was increase your activity and cut down on how much you eat. So, my goal was 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 days of the week and watch what I eat. Well, after a month I can tell you I haven’t disciplined myself very well and constantly fall back into my old habits of inactivity and late night snacking. Discipline yourself says the Lord. As I need to discipline myself in my desire to lose weight, so do I need to discipline myself spiritually. My goal; to seek to be holy, for God is holy.

In the second section I hear; ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. What a gift. Jesus gave his life for us so that we might be forgiven of all our sin and be able to experience and live the life God offers unto us. We have been ransomed because Jesus died for us, so may we live because Jesus rose to show he gives new life.

Then in the last section what I hear is; 23You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. Thanks be to God for this amazing gift of new life, given us through Jesus Christ.

And in closing I return to these earlier words; “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

O God; thanks and praise be to you for you have given me the wonderful gift of life, especially the new life given me through Christ. May I treasure this gift given to me and may I seek to be holy as you are holy. Help me trust in you who is the one who can guide me in your ways and guide me along my pathways of life. Amen.

Psalm 115 – Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.
