Daily Devotion Saturday, November 23

Saturday, November 23, 2013 – Psalm 113; Nehemiah 7:73b-8:3, 5-18; Revelation 22:14-21 and Matthew 18:21-35

Revelation 22:14-21 – 16“It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
17  The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.”
And let everyone who hears say, “Come.”
And let everyone who is thirsty come.
Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift. …

Before you today is a gift. It’s wrapped up in the nicest of wrapping paper. It has a beautiful bow on it. It looks so wonderful that you almost don’t want to open it. Yet the giver of the gift says, open it. Untie the bow, rip off the paper, and enjoy what is so nicely wrapped.

The gift inside, is the very one who offers the gift, namely our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let everyone who hears, open the box.
Let everyone who is thirsty, open the box.
Let anyone who wishes open the box and take the water of life, Jesus Christ, who is the true gift of life.

Friends today open the gift offered to all and quench your thirst as you sip from the waters of life. Thanks be to God for the giver who gives the true gift that gives true life.

Just received a call from Joe Carmack, that his beloved wife Shirley died this morning. Friends she’s received her gift and is now enjoying it. Offer prayers today for Joe as he will truly miss her and miss his daily visits to his beloved wife.

Then in Matthew we hear Jesus responding to a question that many ask of our Lord.

Matthew 18:21-35 – 21Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.

What comes to mind for me as I read this are the words we pray most every Sunday and for many of us at least once a day; “forgive my debts as I forgive my debtors.”

Friends as God has forgiven my sins not just 7 times but 7,777,777 times or maybe even into figures like the national debt 7,777,777,777 times, so I am to forgive others. In scripture 7 is a perfect number and represents wholeness or even holiness. God truly and completely forgives us, so we also should forgive others as God has forgiven us.

Is there someone or ones you need to forgive today? Free yourself today by forgiving them. Anger, grief, disappointment come to us when we’ve been hurt by another. By forgiving them you can free yourself of these life taking emotions and open yourself up to the life giving gifts God gives unto you.

O God, first and foremost thank you for the gift given through your Son, Jesus Christ. Truly as we abide in him we find real life. It is he that can quench our thirst and is the spring of eternal water, eternal life. Thanks also for forgiving all my sins, not just some but all. Guide me in my forgiving others as you have forgiven me. Help me let go of anger, grief and disappointments that have come my way. In holding onto these I miss out on a lot of life. In forgiving and letting go, my heart is open to your life giving Spirit that comes only through you. Lord, help me today forgive as I have been forgiven. Amen.

Psalm 113 – Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord;
praise the name of the Lord.

Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time on and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to its setting
the name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens.
