Daily Devotion Tuesday, November 5

Tuesday, November 5, 2013 – Psalm 97; Nehemiah 12:27-31a, 42b-47 or Ezra 4:7, 11-24;
Revelation 11:1-19 and Matthew 13:44-52

Matthew 13:44-52 – 44“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

45“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

In the book I’m reading with some colleagues, Being Church: Reflections on How to Live as the People of God by John F. Alexander, the author makes the point that the organized church is really a poor reflection of what the Church is really to be. What gets in the way? The facilities of the church; the church budget, church politics, the pastors and members; all that and more gets in the way of really helping people see and experience what it means to be the Body of Christ, the Church.

I share that because I do believe if we really realized the real value of the Kingdom of Heaven we would really invest our whole into it; we’d invest our money, time and talents.

So what is the Kingdom of Heaven? It is people really loving God with all their heart, soul, mind and self and loving one another as they love themselves. It is letting God be lord over all our life and caring for others as they care for us.

Every week we pray and maybe more often than that; “thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven”. For this prayer to be answered we, God’s people, have to be willing to invest our all in God’s kingdom that has come and is coming.

Today, pray this prayer with me; O God; may Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Help it become a reality within me and then may I share it with others. Amen.

Psalm 97 – The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad!

The heavens proclaim his righteousness;
and all the peoples behold his glory.

12 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
and give thanks to his holy name!
