Saturday, October 19, 2013 – Psalm 84; Jeremiah 52:1-34; 1 Corinthians 15:12-29 and Matthew 11:7-15

Psalm 84 – How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, indeed it faints
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh sing for joy
to the living God.

1 Corinthians 15:12-29 – 20But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. 21For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; 22for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ.

The Psalmist was speaking of the Temple in Jerusalem but for us it is easy to think of heaven as we read those words. I’ve met several people who say I’m ready to go when God is ready to take me or they say I’m ready for Jesus to return and set everything straight. This chaotic and out of control life we’re living is too much, I’m ready for heaven and the peace it will bring.

I understand what they are saying. This life is full of chaos. They found a way to reopen government and raise the debt ceiling for now but the problems that brought the crisis about are still there, the chaos really hasn’t gone away, simply quieted for now.

I give thanks for the promise of life after death. I give thanks that scripture points out over and over again that God is a God who overcomes all life crises and gives new life. I don’t fear death and I don’t fear living for God is with me. God has seen his people through rougher times than we are facing and God will have the final word and that word is a new heaven and new earth.

In verses 5 & 6 of Psalm 84 we hear;

Happy are those whose strength is in you,
in whose heart are the highways to Zion.
As they go through the valley of Baca
they make it a place of springs;
the early rain also covers it with pools.

As we go through the valleys of hardship, it is our faith in God which can give us life. I’ve known many Christians who faced hard and difficult times yet found hope in God who promises to be with us, guide us and help us. May we too trust in God who is always with us.

84:12 O Lord of hosts,
happy is everyone who trusts in you.

O God see us through these difficult times and times that may even get more difficult. May we trust in you, you who is God of resurrection and new life. Thanks be to you O God for how you are with us always. Amen.
