Daily Devotion Thursday, October 17

Thursday, October 17, 2013 – Psalm 82; Jeremiah 38:1-13; 1 Corinthians 14:26-33a (33b-36) 37-40 and Matthew 10:34-42

Matthew 10:34-42 – 37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

I’m reading a book with some friends of mine; Being Church: Reflections on How to Live as the People of God by John F. Alexander. In it he talks a lot about how we, God’s people, need to be lifting up the fact that unless we are willing to lose our life we’ll never find the real life God calls us to.

In our reading today we hear; “37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;” I’d add, whoever loves anything or anyone more than Christ will never find the real life Jesus came to call us to.

The question I’m asking myself is; what or whom has highest priority in my life? Does anything come before God? Whatever it is, may I now subordinate it unto God.

Today, hear Jesus saying unto you; “39Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.”

What changes in your life do you need to make to give God first place in your whole life?

O God, reveal to us all that we value highly. Help us put everything and everyone under your Lordship and if we need to truly give up something to follow you, may we do just this. Guide us on the path to finding real life. Amen.
