Readings for Monday, October 14, 2013 – Jeremiah 36:11-26; 1 Corinthians (13:1-3) 13:4-13 and Matthew 10:5-15

As I was doing this morning’s devotion I discovered I’d made a mistake yesterday. I read and reflected on the readings for Sunday instead of Monday. So, I’ve listed above the readings for Monday, so you can read them along with today’s if you wish. I discovered this because I wondered, why did they skip over one of the best known portions of scripture 1 Corinthians 13, Paul’s chapter on love? They hadn’t, I did. So I went back and read it along with the other readings from Monday.

1 Corinthians (13:1-3) 13:4-13 – 4Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

This also happens at times in my life. I’ll do something or say something, then in looking back on it I’ll wonder where was the love in what I did? At times love comes easily, at other times I have to really work at it. I give thanks that for God love is God’s very nature and it comes natural to God. May it become natural for us as well.

The love Paul is talking about in this text is sacrificial love, love that puts God above all else and God’s commandment to love others as God loves us. I had the Greek word for this type of love inscribed upon Phyllis’ wedding ring. I wish I’d loved her with that type of love, yet I now strive to and hope to learn how to do this more day by day.

Today reflect on God’s amazing and abundant love of you and then strive to love others as God loves you. I know as I do this I’ll always come up short but hopefully I’ll grow in my love of God and being able to love others as God loves me.

O God, your love is truly amazing and abundant. It never ends. Praise be to you, O God, that love is your very nature. Today, as I reflect on your love may you reveal to me ways that I may love others as you love me. Help my ability to love grow day by day. Amen.

Psalm 80 – Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.
