Daily Devotion Saturday, October 12

Saturday, October 12, 2013 – Psalm 78; Jeremiah 35:1-19; 1 Corinthians 12:27-13:3 and Matthew 9:35-10:4

Matthew 9:35-10:4 – 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Some interesting things about the day we live in. It used to be that we lived in a churched culture, meaning most people around us attended and were members of a local church. Today, most of the people around us do not attend church. Many do not have faith or lost faith in the church. Many may not even know of Jesus Christ. Many have placed their faith in other beliefs. Jesus said; the harvest is plentiful. That is especially true for our days.

This Sunday in the Sunday School class that I teach we’ll be looking at the first great end of the church as lifted up in the Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The first great end of the church is; “The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind.”

Now many would say, this is the job of the pastor for it involves preaching. Yes, but this involves much more, it involves the sharing of our faith with others. Note I state it as sharing not telling. I know I don’t like it when someone tells me something but when someone shares something with me I’m a better listener. So this is a time for sharing our faith with others.

Jesus said; “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

When we pray that the Lord send out laborers into his harvest, we may be thinking about others. Yet, I believe each of us as a follower of Christ is called to share our faith with others.

It’s first important to know what we believe, how Christ has helped change our lives. Knowing this can then help us as we share our faith with others.

Today, review what Christ has done for you. As I think about this I recall how he’s been with me in the good times and bad. How he died for all my sins and rose to show he has the power over life and death. He is my savior and Lord. He’s first in my life and everything else falls under him.

So as I pray, “Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” I’m praying that God send out you and me into the harvest, into our neighborhood to share his good news with others. May we find occasion to do this even today.

O God, I hear your call for us to share our faith with others. My first response is fear, yet I know you will go with me and you will help me have the words as I share my faith with others. Today, may I find occasion to do just this. Thanks for the faith you have given me through others, thanks for abiding with me. Use me as an instrument of sharing Your good news today. Amen.

Psalm 78; Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
that our ancestors have told us.
We will not hide them from their children;
we will tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.
