Daily Devotion Thursday, October 3

Thursday, October 3, 2013 – Psalm 71; 2 Kings 18:28-37; 1 Corinthians 9:1-15 and Matthew 7:22-29

Matthew 7:22-29 – 24“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.

As I read these words I think of all the flooded homes in Colorado. They built their homes on solid rock. Many built them far above the 100 year flood plain, but the floods came and washed out many homes, businesses and roads. The clean-up continues and will continue for many weeks to come. May we support those helping with families in need through our prayers and donations.

Jesus’ words to us today point out that it’s not just in the hearing of the word that we build our lives on a sure foundation but in acting upon them. Hearing and doing is what is important. Life is full of challenges, disasters, and the like. We can be well one minute and seriously ill the next. What’s important is not worrying about what may come, but building on the firm foundation of our Lord Jesus Christ through the reading and hearing of his word and acting upon it. The acting upon it is done in the whole of our life. So may we seek to do Christ’s word to us of loving God and loving others as God loves us.

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

And the wise man’s house stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

And the foolish man’s house went “splat!” [clap hands once]

So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

And the blessings will come down

Oh, the blessings come down

As your prayers go up

The blessings come down

As your prayers go up

The blessings come down

As your prayer go up

So build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ.

O God, may we build our life on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ and do all that he calls us to do; love you and love others. May we do this even today. Amen.

Psalm 71 – 16 I will come praising the mighty deeds of the Lord God,
I will praise your righteousness, yours alone.
