Thursday, September 19, 2013m – Psalm 59; 1 Kings 22:29-45; 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:15 and Matthew 5:1-10

1 Corinthians 2:14-3:15 – 10According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.

A study group that I participate in is reading the book Being Church: Reflections on How to Live as the People of God by John F. Alexander.  One of his goals in the book is to call us, Christ’s followers of today, back to being the church born in and through Christ.

In our reading from 1 Corinthians we hear Paul calling the Christians at Corinth back to the one who is their foundation, namely Jesus Christ. We are to choose with care how to build upon that sure foundation. One of his points in the chapter I just read is how quickly we went from being Christ’s people to being organized. Organization isn’t bad in and of itself except as we seek to perpetuate the organization instead of being Christ in the world today.

The question I’ll be asking myself today is, what was Jesus’ hope for his followers? What did he expect of them? The follow-up question will be, how can I live into Jesus’ hopes and expectations and then help others do so as well?

I’d be interested to hear from you as to what you believe Jesus’ hopes and desires are for his followers today?

Matthew 5:1-10 – The Beatitudes – Blessed are …

In our readings from Matthew we turn to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Today’s reading is the Beatitudes as recorded in Matthew – Blessed are … Here’s a link to a video to help you hear these words of Jesus today.

Friends, blessed are we because of Jesus who calls us daily to follow him. Blessed are we and so too are we to be God’s blessing unto others.

O God, truly we have been and are being blessed in you, through you and by you. As the full moon breaks through the clouds this morning and its light shines upon me, may your light and love be reflected from me and the whole body of Jesus Christ this very day. Blessed am I and so I am to be a blessing unto others. Amen.

Psalm 59 – 16 But I will sing of your might;
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been a fortress for me
and a refuge in the day of my distress.
17 O my strength, I will sing praises to you,
for you, O God, are my fortress,
the God who shows me steadfast love.
