Tuesday, September 17, 2013 – Psalm 57; 1 Kings 21:17-29; 1 Corinthians 1:20-31 and Matthew 4:12-17

In Psalm 57 we hear; 8a Awake, my soul!

There are times when I know my soul is asleep or has been deadened by the events of the day, busyness of life, or my own laziness. When I notice this it would be good to say unto myself/unto my soul – WAKE UP! WAKE UP, O MY SLEEPY SOUL! WAKE UP!

Life sometimes overwhelms me – the massive 1,000 year flooding in Colorado, the shootings in the Naval Yard in Washington D. C., bills to pay, life events of others – all this can deaden my soul. Yet, when I turn unto God, seek God out where God can be found (his word, in creation, in life, right in my very midst) my soul wakes up and sees how good and great God is. Then my soul wakes up and I give thanks unto God for life.

Hear now more of Psalm 57.

Psalm 57 –     Awake, my soul!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn.
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is as high as the heavens;
your faithfulness extends to the clouds.

As our soul awakens, thanksgiving is the natural response.

In the reading from 1Corinthians we hear;

1 Corinthians 1:20-31 – 30He (God) is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

As we center ourselves in Christ. As we let our souls be awakened unto God. It is then that the wisdom of God comes upon us and we grow in Christ. It is then that we experience God’s righteousness and find ourselves being sanctified and redeemed. It is God who does this and more as our soul is awakened unto God.

This day pray with me this simple prayer. “Awake, O my soul. O my Soul, awake!”

As our soul is awakened unto God, then may we join the Psalmist in saying;

Psalm 57;7 My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast.
I will sing and make melody.

O God, awake O my soul. Awaken it unto your righteousness, your goodness, your love and guide me today along your way. Amen.
