Daily Devotion Friday, September 13

Friday, September 13, 2013 – Psalm 54; 1 Kings 18:20-40; Philippians 3:1-16 and Matthew 3:1-12

Matthew 3:1-12 – 1In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.’”

When I read these words concerning John the Baptist I always ask myself, how am I preparing the way of the Lord? For me it doesn’t mean standing on a street corner or in front of the church proclaiming; “repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” For me it means striving to build relationships with people that opens the door to conversations about life and faith. For me it means striving to be one of God’s lights that reveal his love to others. For me it means striving to live the faith, always praying for opportunities to help others know the Christ. What I regret is that sometimes I end up making Christ’s way crooked because of what I say or do.

Yesterday and today, we kick off a new year for mentoring students in our public schools. In the program we can’t initiate conversations with a student about Christ but we can show Christ’s love through the relationship built between mentor and student. We have two motto’s for the mentor program/ministry. “A student will forget the presents we give them but they will never forget our presence.” The other is; “1 mentor + 1 student = 2 lives changed”. May God use our mentors to prepare the way of the Lord not only in students’ lives, but their families and in the life of the mentors.

I’d ask for prayer for the people in Colorado affected by the floods of yesterday and continuing today. Fort Collins is okay but areas near Longmont and Boulder, especially the small mountain communities are being impacted. Pray for the safety of 1st responders and all who are aiding those affected by the flooding.

O God, help me be your light unto others this day. Be with the families in Colorado affected by the flooding keep them safe and keep 1st responders safe. Amen.

Psalm 54 – But surely, God is my helper;
the Lord is the upholder of my life. ….

With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good.
