Daily Devotion Wednesday, September 11

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 – Psalm 52; 1 Kings 17:1-24; Philippians 2:1-11 and Matthew 2:1-12

As a way to honor all who died on 9/11/01 the President has called for a moment of silence at 8:46 am (EST). I invite you to have a moment of silence and to pray for our nation and the world. If unable to have that moment of silence at that time, find a time this day to be silent and to remember. You can use Psalm 52 our reading for today as a way to reflect on the past and know how we can respond faithfully.

Psalm 52 – Why do you boast, O mighty one,
of mischief done against the godly?
All day long you are plotting destruction.
Your tongue is like a sharp razor,
you worker of treachery.
You love evil more than good,
and lying more than speaking the truth.   Selah …

Terrorists, those who plot evil, have been with us for a long time and will be with us. They plot evil and destruction. On 9/11/01 their plans for evil were carried out.

I can remember getting ready for work in our house in Wichita and hearing a radio blaring outside the kitchen door. I thought it was music or simply a talk show going on. Once I stepped out the door I asked the telephone line repairman why his radio was up so loud. He said; “do you not know, a plane has hit one of the twin towers and they think we are under attack.” I immediately went in and turned on the TV only to see the second plane hit the second tower and then to continue to watch as the towers fell.

Friends, many died that day; many first responders and many workers. Today we remember the fallen. But remembering isn’t the only thing we should do. We should give thanks for how God raises up Godly people who work for good instead of evil, and how in the end of all time it is God who will be the victor.

But I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.
I will thank you forever,
because of what you have done.
In the presence of the faithful
I will proclaim your name, for it is good.

Friends in the face of the evil of our day, may we seek to be one who trusts in God, in God’s steadfast love that was with us as a nation on 9/11/01, is with us today and will be with us forever. May we thank God for how we have been protected from other attacks and how when evil does strike again God will be with us.

Today, remember all who died, all who suffer because of the events of this day and all who have helped to rebuild New York City, our nation and even the world. May we continue to have success in the war against terrorism and may God change the hearts of those who plot evil against others.

O God, we give thanks for your everlasting love that see us through the darkest valleys of life and guides us to the mountain tops. As we remember the events of the past may we also give thanks for how you saw us through those days and continue to guide us to days of new life. Amen.
