Daily Devotion Monday, September 9

Monday, September 9, 2013 – Psalm 50; 1 Kings 13:1-10; Philippians 1:1-11 and Mark 15:40-47

Mark 15:40-47 – 46Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was laid.

Jesus died and Jesus was buried. (Meditate upon his being buried and the tomb sealed.)

Today, we turn from James to Philippians. Paul’s prayer contained in this opening section is a prayer I pray for all of us.

Philippians 1:1-11 – 6I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. … 9And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight 10to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

For me, every day is the day of Jesus Christ. It is he who makes this new day possible. It is he who gave his life that we might have life. So every day is the day of Jesus Christ. My hope and prayer for my daily devotions is that they might help me grow in Christ and then that they may overflow in helping you grow in Christ.

So, my prayer for me and you is that our love may overflow this day and every day more and more with the knowledge and full insight of Jesus Christ.

O God, thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus Christ, who was willing to give his life for us and all our sins upon the cross. I give thanks that his burial is not the final word, for we await the rest of the story. Today, may we seek to grow in your love for us and to live as if you were right here beside us and in us, for in doing so we will seek to be your light, your love unto others this day. Guide me as I share how the mentoring program in Forsyth is done so easily because the churches cooperate together and work at finding mentors for elementary students.

Thank you, O God, for this day which you did not promise us but yet are giving to us. Amen.

Psalm 50 – 23 Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me;
to those who go the right way
I will show the salvation of God.”
