Daily Devotion Tuesday, September 3

Monday readings; included for those who read the texts daily. Included mostly so you don’t miss the opening reading from James and the Gospel reading for the day. Didn’t have internet yesterday and spent day with family in Wichita.

2 Chronicles 6:32-7:7; James 2:1-13; Mark 14:53-65

Mark 14:53-65 – 53They took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled.

Tuesday, September 3, 2013 – Psalm 45; 1 Kings 8:65-9:9; James 2:14-26 and Mark 14:66-72

James 2:1-13 – 10For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.

James 2:14-26 – 14What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you?

We move now from the book of Acts to the book of James for our readings from the Epistles. James really focuses on how our faith is really dead, not real without works.

In the reading that was for yesterday, we hear how if we break even one part of the law, we’ve broken the whole law. Thanks be to our Lord Jesus that he died for all our sins and died because we all have broken God’s law and are in need of one who would pay the price. Jesus did and now through faith our sins are forgiven. Yet if this doesn’t lead us to strive to do good, to honor what God has done what good is our faith. For James it seems that through our good works we show that we really believe and give thanks for what God has done.

I know I’ll never fully do all that God wills for me to do. I’ll never be perfect, yet thanks to Jesus’ going the way of the cross I can be assured that the penalty for all my sins have been paid for and I can freely live seeking to do the good God calls me to do. So, because I believe in God, in Jesus, I strive to do good; to love God and my neighbor.

I encourage you to be reading daily the readings from the Gospel because we are now hearing of Jesus trial and soon will read of his being crucified and risen.

O God, I know that I don’t do all the good you call me to do – show me the errors of my ways and guide me in your paths of righteousness that I may attempt to do the good you place before me. I believe, help me live out my faith before you and others. Amen.
