Daily Devotion Tuesday, August 27

Tuesday, August 27, 2013 – Psalm 40; 1 Kings 1:32-2:4 (5-46a) 46b; Acts 26:24-27:8 and Mark 13:28-37

Psalm 40 – I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit,
    out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
    making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.

Today, I find myself praying for those who fight depression or other forms of mental illness. I believe it affects as many people as does the illness of Diabetes but isn’t as socially acceptable. One can talk openly of having to deal with Diabetes but one can’t talk openly about having to fight/deal with depression/mental illness. Yet both occur because the body or mind is need of some help to function. Depression and mental illness come with a stigma that society and the person puts on it, yet it’s not that different from diabetes. The one with diabetes needs medical help to keep the diabetes under control. So the person with depression or mental illness needs medical help to keep their illness under control.

Depression and mental illness is a desolate pit, a miry bog. Today, I pray for the many people I know who fight with this illness praying that they can get the help, given by God, so they can set their feet once again upon solid ground – God’s love given unto them. May God begin even today to put a new song upon their hearts.

O God, this day be with the many that I know who are fighting depression and/or mental illness. Thanks be to you for doctors and psychologist and psychiatrists who know how to help. Yet, it is only as you break into their dark world that they can be lifted up from darkness unto your light and love. May you break into the dark world of those fighting depression this day. May your peace and love that surpasses all understanding come upon them and abide in them.

O Lord, I also pray today for the doctors and staff who are operating upon my niece Amy. They are going to repair the hole in her heart. I’m amazed at how they are going to do this but thanks be to you for the knowledge and skill they have. Guide them this day and be with Amy as she begins to get stronger day by day. Amen.
