Monday, August 26, 2013 – Psalm 39; 1 Kings 1:(1-4) 5-31; Acts 26:1-23 and Mark 13:14-27

Psalm 39 – 12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord,
    and give ear to my cry;
    do not hold your peace at my tears.
For I am your passing guest,
    an alien, like all my forebears.

O Lord, I am your passing guest.

What I think of when I think of being a guest of someone is my gratitude for them as my host. They provide me shelter. They often give me food. They welcome me. In return I try to respect their home, their place. Friends, we are God’s passing guests. He welcomes us and wants an abiding/lasting relationship with us.

I compared this verse in other translations and found; stranger (The Message), foreigner/stranger (New International Version) and sojourner (Young’s Literal Translation).

Friends, the bottom line is that we are simply passing guests of God. May we seek to honor our host and give thanks for how God provides for us. May we also seek to pass on to those who follow us the stories of our faith in God and a better world.

Hear also this from verse 4 & 5, 7 of today’s Psalm.

Lord, let me know my end,
    and what is the measure of my days;
    let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a few handbreadths,
    and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight.
Surely everyone stands as a mere breath.

“And now, O Lord, what do I wait for?
    My hope is in you.

O Lord, I am your passing guest. May I show my gratefulness to you who provides for my every need, who welcomes me. May I treat all your guests with respect and honor you by striving to pass on to future generations all you have given me. Amen.
