Monday, August 19, 2013 – Psalm 33; 2 Samuel 17:24-18:8; Acts 22:30-23:11 and Mark 11:12-26

Mark 11:12-26 – 17He was teaching and saying, “Is it not written,
     ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? ….

25“Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”

Today’s reading from Mark reminds us of the importance of prayer. Jesus said; “my house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” I give thanks that prayer is such an important part of worship at Community Presbyterian Church. We take time to hear prayer requests and have some fun interaction as well. People share their prayer concerns and then I’ll summarize it and conclude by saying; “Lord, in your mercy” and the people say; “hear our prayer.” It’s a wonderful time of sharing with one another and God is very much a part of it.

Yet, I do think that prayer can be made even a stronger part of our ministry. Too often I get busy during the week and day and don’t really stop and pray. I don’t bring before God the joys and concerns I have for our nation or the world. It’s also been hard to get a group together to simply pray. I trust people are praying at home, but it’s also nice for people to gather to pray. This is simply my sharing of a personal confession and a concern.

What role does prayer play in your daily life? What do you lift up before God?

Verse 25 of today’s reading has a great admonition; “whenever praying forgive.” In the Lord’s prayer we say; “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” Are there people God is calling you to forgive? Do as Jesus commands; forgive. Doing this can transform lives; yours and the one you forgive.

O Lord, may I be more faithful in setting aside time to pray. Too often I get busy doing things and don’t stop everything and spend time just with you. Reveal to me today whom I need to forgive, whom I am holding a grudge against. Then help me to forgive them as you forgive me. Amen.

Psalm 33 – 20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
    he is our help and shield.
21 Our heart is glad in him,
    because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.
