Daily Devotion Wednesday, August 7

Wednesday, August 7, 2013 – Psalm 23; 2 Samuel 9:1-13; Acts 19:1-10 and Mark 8:34-9:1

In our reading through the Psalms; 1 to 150, we now come to the most familiar one, one many of us memorized when young; Psalm 23. Because it is so familiar to us, I’m going to share it with us first from The Message and then an interpretive version I found in my mom’s Bible. I have shared it at many a funeral service. Hear now God’s word to us from the 23rd Psalm.

Psalm 23 (The Message)

1-3 God, my shepherd!
    I don’t need a thing.
You have bedded me down in lush meadows,
you find me quiet pools to drink from.
True to your word,
you let me catch my breath
and send me in the right direction.

Even when the way goes through
    Death Valley,
I’m not afraid
when you walk at my side.
Your trusty shepherd’s crook
    makes me feel secure.

You serve me a six-course dinner
right in front of my enemies.
You revive my drooping head;
    my cup brims with blessing.

Your beauty and love chase after me
    every day of my life.
I’m back home in the house of God
for the rest of my life.

Psalm 23, interpretive version found in my mom’s Bible.

The Lord is my shepherd — perfect salvation.

I shall not want — perfect satisfaction.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures — perfect rest.

He leadeth me beside the still waters — perfect peace.

He restoreth my soul — perfect restoration.

He leadeth me in paths of righteousness for his names sake — perfect guidance.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil — perfect protection.

For thou art with me — perfect companionship.

Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me — perfect comfort.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies — perfect provision.

Thou anointest my head with oil — perfect consecration.

My cup runneth over — perfect joy.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life — perfect care.

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever — perfect destiny.

I invite you to read these over several times. Which phrase speaks to your heart this day? What do you hear God saying to you? What strikes me today is; “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life”. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Keep your phrase with you throughout your day and/or refer back to Psalm 23 every now and again as a reminder that “The Lord is your shepherd”.

Thanks and praise be to you, O God. Amen.
