Daily Devotion Saturday, August 3

Saturday, August 3, 2013 – Psalm 20; 2 Samuel 5:22-6:11; Acts 17:16-34 and Mark 8:1-10

Acts 17:16-34 – 22Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. 23For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.” What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 26From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, 27so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him — though indeed he is not far from each one of us. 28For ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said,
‘For we too are his offspring.’

When I read this text I think of all the signs of faith one can find today. On our money we state, “in God we trust.” There are many churches in even the smallest of communities. Many Christians have Christian bumper stickers on their cars. This reminds me of the following story.

One day an officer pulls over a man for road rage. The officer had observed the man driving recklessly and shouting and shaking his fist at other drivers to get out of his way. The officer arrested him and hauled him off to the county jail. The man set in jail overnight. In the morning he was released. The man asked why he’d been arrested and the officer said; “I thought you had stolen the vehicle. Your bumper sticker said; “honk if you love Jesus” and the way you were carrying on I knew you couldn’t be the owner of the car.”

In our reading Paul reminds us; 24The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands,

Friends, people aren’t going to find faith because of what we put on our money, because of the many churches in our community; they are going to find faith because we God’s people choose to live out the faith given us as God’s people. “In God we live and move and have our being”. It’s because of how we live out the faith, that others will have faith.

So, may we God’s people today, strive to live out the faith given us in Jesus Christ and share God’s love with others by what we do and say.

O God, I know my humanness gets in the way of my being your disciple and showing your love. Guide me through my day and help me show Christ’s love to others by what I do, as well as what I say. Amen.
