Daily Devotion Thursday, August 1

Thursday, August 1, 2013  – Psalm 18; 2 Samuel 4:1-12; Acts 16:25-40 and Mark 7:1-23

Mark 7:1-23 – 14Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: 15there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.”

17When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18He said to them, “Then do you also fail to understand? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile, 19since it enters, not the heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20And he said, “It is what comes out of a person that defiles. 21For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, 22adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. 23All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

In my prayers I will often insert, “in thought, word and deed”. I begin with thought because from our thoughts comes many of our words and actions. If I am angry and thinking angry thoughts, then hurtful words and also hurtful actions will often follow. If I set my mind on God’s love and righteousness, then I’ll seek to love God and other people. Good thoughts bring Godly results, bad thoughts lead to harmful words and actions.

Today, note your mood and your thoughts throughout the day. How do they affect how you live for and with God? How do they affect you and what you say and do?

Psalm 18 – 28 It is you who light my lamp;
the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness. …

46 The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation,

May the blessings of God guide you and be with you throughout your day.

O God, forgive me for the many bad thoughts I have that thus cause me to say hurtful things or do things that hurt others. May you help me identify when I’m wandering from you and your ways and turn me back to You the One who offers real life. Amen.
