Daily Devotion Wednesday, July 31

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 – Psalm 17; 2 Samuel 3:22-39; Acts 16:16-24 and Mark 6:47-56

Mark 6:47-56 – 47When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning, walking on the sea. He intended to pass them by. 49But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; 50for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” 51Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

If you read all of yesterday’s reading from the Gospel you read of the feeding of the 5,000. All fed with 5 loaves and 2 fish. Not only that but they had twelve baskets full of leftovers. Now the disciples see Jesus walking on the water and calming the seas. All this utterly astounds them, yet they still don’t understand who Jesus really is for their hearts were hardened.

My sense about this is that they had a particular opinion about Jesus, he was to be king, king in the lineage and in the likeness of David. He was to usher in the new day for them and all Israel and Judah. He was to be their political king and drive out the Roman Empire and all other foreign adversaries. Now an earthly king wouldn’t walk on water, nor be able to feed 5,000 but because their hearts and minds were set on this earthly king, they simply did not get it. They simply didn’t fully understand whom this one named Jesus really was. It wouldn’t be until Jesus died and rose that they’d begin to really fully understand.

Do any of your beliefs about God, about Jesus keep you from fully experiencing the fullness of God revealed unto us through this one who fed 5,000, walked upon water and died for all our sins? To answer this question, I think we have to ask God to remove any blinders we may have to the fullness of his glory and righteousness. That will be my prayer for this day. One I invite you to pray as well.

O God, the disciples didn’t fully understand. They had preconceived conceptions which kept them from fully experiencing your glory and righteousness. So, do I have conceptions of you which keep me from fully experiencing your love, your glory and your righteousness. Help me sense all that keeps me from really experiencing your love, your power, your glory and your righteousness. Then help me set them aside so I can more fully sense you and thus love you more fully. Amen.

Psalm 17 – A Prayer of David. Prayer for Deliverance from Persecutors

I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
incline your ear to me, hear my words.
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.

Guard me as the apple of the eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,
